Hello, this is Keith Livingston, welcome to "Learn NLP in a Flash." These free, brief, educational segments provide you with solid, usable NLP techniques you can apply to your life right away. Each segment explores the basics of an important and practical NLP technique. Today's subject is removing fear... What could you accomplish if you had no fear? Would you get a promotion, a raise or start that business you always wanted to? Would you improve your current relationship or finally get up the nerve to talk to that someone special? The reason most people aren't successful as they'd like has little to do with ability and much to do with fear. We've all been programmed by our past. Where we've run into danger, embarrassment or anxiety, we may feel fear around similar events. But why should we let that incident in the third grade get in the way of what we want to accomplish now? NLP has a wonderful process for removing fear. It's called the Fast Phobia Cure and it can deal with the most severe fears. I once used it to cure a man of fear of public speaking while we were both in front of a crowd! You can use this technique on any memory or imagined event that is causing anxiety. Before you start, remember these two important facts: 1) Your fear was learned in an instant and can be unlearned just as quickly. 2) A part of the mind has been protecting you from something it perceives as dangerous - let's help that part of the mind understand more fully - so it can help protect you more effectively. Here's how you do it... Think of fearful a situation. Associate into it (put yourself there mentally). Rate your discomfort on a scale of 1 - 10. Imagine a small black & white tv screen. See the negative experience from a distance, as if you are watching it on that tv. Run the movie of that experience from before the you on the screen is uncomfortable until after you are OK again. If you are not comfortable watching the movie from this distance, dissociate another level - imagine yourself watching yourself, watching the movie. Watch it again, make the scene silly (clown noses and floppy shoes on everyone, silly music). Change various aspects of the movie to make it more and more silly (I often add beanie hats to people). At the end of the scene (when the you on the screen is feeling OK again) make it a still image. Associate into that image (put yourself in that image mentally). Quickly rewind (it's important to do this part at high speed and to go all the way backwards until you get to a point before the incident). Blank out your "mental screen." Now, starting again with the still image at the end of the film, associate in, and rewind even more quickly (2 seconds or less). Repeat the rewinding several times. Think about the situation again, rate your feelings on a scale of 1 - 10. Repeat the entire process until you're comfortable thinking about the situation. That's it for today's "Learn NLP in a Flash" segment.
